The “Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review” was officially launched in Cairo

 

26 Egyptian civil society organizations across the country founded “Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review”, The only official coalition whose work is based entirely on the UPR.

The coalition was established at the invitation of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights within the framework of a project The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool for Improving Public Policies during the Transition Which is implemented by the Foundation with funding from the European Union over the course of 2016-2017.

During the two-day meeting, the achievements of Maat Foundation in the file of international mechanisms for the protection of human rights were presented through a short film that summarizes the Foundation’s efforts since 2009 in this file, especially the Foundation’s efforts related to the universal periodic review as a relatively new mechanism of international mechanisms for the protection of human rights.https://goo.gl/HmtkRt).

The meeting also discussed and approved the statute of the coalition, which included a set of basic information about the nature and purposes of the alliance, the conditions and patterns of membership, and the coalition bodies that will lead the coalition to achieve its goals for which it was established. The meeting concluded with the election of the Board of Trustees of the coalition, which included:

!) Women and Development Association in Alexandria, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

2) Partners Foundation for Transparency in Cairo, as vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees

3) The Justice Foundation for Development and Human Rights in Sohag, a member of the Board of Trustees

4) The Will and Challenge Association for People with Disabilities in North Sinai, a member of the Board of Trustees

5) All People Association for Development and Human Rights in Assiut, member of the Board of Trustees

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights will also take over the general secretariat of the coalition.

The coalition, which consists of 26 non-governmental organizations of founding members, seeks to build a sustainable institution to follow up on the implementation of Egypt's voluntary commitments to the universal periodic review at the local level, to raise the institutional capacities of the member organizations of the coalition through experience, and to implement a range of voluntary activities to increase community awareness of the UPR Communicating with policy makers to adopt public policies in line with Egypt's voluntary commitments to the universal periodic review, and issuing reports related to human rights to participate in the UPR sessions for Egypt.

The “Universal Periodic Review” project as a tool to improve public policies during the transitional phase seeks to enhance the role of the universal periodic review to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt by actively involving civil society organizations, activists and media professionals in following up and calling for the necessary reform of human rights. And it adopts new policies compatible with international human rights standards based on the 2014 universal periodic review.
