The first of its kind UPR alliance begins its founding meeting in Cairo<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

25 Egyptian civil society organizations meet to approve the list and elect a board of trustees<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Today, over two days, 25 Egyptian civil society organizations are meeting to establish \u201cCivil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review\u201d,<\/strong>The first of its kind in the world to be formally and permanently established for the UPR.<\/p>\n

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights had called for the establishment of the relevant coalition within the framework of a project The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool for Improving Public Policies during the Transition<\/strong>“<\/strong> Which is implemented by the Foundation with funding from the European Union over the course of 2016-2017.<\/p>\n

The coalition, which consists of 25 non-governmental organizations of founding members, seeks to build a permanent and sustainable institution to follow up the government's work at the local level, especially with regard to implementing Egypt's voluntary commitments to the universal periodic review, raising the institutional capacities of the coalition member organizations, and carrying out a range of activities to enhance community awareness of the periodic review. Comprehensive, communicating with policy makers to adopt public policies in line with Egypt's voluntary commitments to the universal periodic review, and issuing reports related to human rights to participate in the UPR session Egypt 2018.<\/p>\n

Noting that the \u201cUPR as a tool for improving public policies during the transitional phase\u201d seeks to enhance the role of the UPR to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt by actively involving civil society organizations, activists and media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights. And adopting new policies compatible with international human rights standards based on the 2014 universal periodic review.<\/p>\n

During the founding meeting of the coalition, the articles of association will be discussed and approved, and the board of trustees will be elected.<\/p>\n
