In a Positive and Constructive Step, Maat Foundation and the Social Affairs Directorate at Cairo Organize an Expanded Meeting for NGOs at Dar El Salam and El Basateen

In a positive, constructive new approach and with kind, generous initiative from the Social Affairs Directorate – Cairo, Maat Foundation hosted an expanded meeting on Monday, May 14, 2012, the meeting included (22) NGOs responsible at Dar El Salam and El Basateen. Mr. Kamal Sherief, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Cairo headed the meeting with the participation of the directors of social affairs departments, managers of NGOs in Dar El Salam and El Basateen Mr. Saied Iskander and Ms. Zeinab Ali. The meeting aimed to discuss the cooperation and coordination chances between local NGOs and the Social Affairs Directorate to contribute in solving regional social problems of priority at the Social Affairs Directorate especially unemployment and marginalized, at risk groups. It is worth mentioning that Maat Foundation is implementing two projects in Dar El Salam and El Basateen, the 1st project is "Integrated Protection for the Families of the Prisoners and Detainees- Integration and Rehabilitation" funded by the Swiss foundation DROSOS and seeks to improve the social and economic conditions for the families of the prisoners and detainees through providing training, rehabilitation, educational and legal aid, social and psychological support along with creating jobs and helping them to integrate in the society. The foundation also implements the project "Citizen's Voice II" in those districts, it seeks to reform the local administration system, document the economic and social violations against the citizens in the target areas along with putting pressures on the decision makers to improve them. In this context, the participant actors agreed on the necessity for active NGOs in those districts to consolidate and coordinate efforts, open new horizons for constructive communication with the administrative and executive authorities to serve the citizens of Dar El Salam and El Basateen. The meeting included speeches for each of Mr. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Cairo when he presented the ministry programs and the funding that could be offered by them to the NGOs, he asked the participants to present their proposals in this regard promising to respond to new, positive ideas contributing to solve the previously mentioned problems. In his speech, Mr. Ayman Okeil, Director of Maat Foundation welcomed the participants and presented the foundation activities' especially the related ones to El Basateen district. The participants proposed solutions to tackle some problems in the target areas documented by Maat foundation during the "Citizen's Voice" project including the trash problem, it was agreed that each NGO should present its proposal to the directorate to be discussed and looked into its funding. On the other side, Maat foundation agreed with the participants to participate in the activities of the project "Integrated Protection for the Families of the Prisoners and Detainees- Integration and Rehabilitation" in accordance with the foundation's philosophy in this project regarding social mobilization, which would facilitate the project's mission to access to the target group, provide them with their needed aid along with enabling them to benefit from the available development opportunities.
