Maat completes the first phase to build the capacity of media professionals for the universal periodic review

An integrated plan for media coverage of local human rights issues, implemented by media professionals between the two training phases

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights concluded today the first phase of the training program "Enhancing the capabilities of media professionals to media coverage of the UPR", Which was implemented between May-September 2016 and included 4 training workshops targeting 100 media professionals working on human rights issues in a group of print, audio and visual media in all governorates of the Republic. It is expected that the media professionals who benefit from the first phase of training will participate in the second phase of the program that will be held October-December 2016.

It is noteworthy that the training program is one of the capacity building components of the “Universal Periodic Review as a Tool for Improving Public Policies during the Transition” project, which the Foundation implements with funding from the European Union over the course of 2016-2017. Which seeks to enhance the role of the universal periodic review to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt by actively engaging civil society organizations, activists and media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights, and adopting new policies compatible with international human rights standards based on the universal periodic review. 2014.

The training program, in its first phase, built the capacity of media professionals on the international system for the protection of human rights, focusing on the universal periodic review mechanism, in addition to enhancing the capabilities of media professionals to improve public policies based on human rights standards and Egypt's international pledges, especially related to the UPR 2014, and equip them with the skills to implement campaigns Informational and linking local issues that pose challenges to human rights and the recommendations of the universal periodic review.

The most important topics of focus for the first phase of the training program included the International Bill of Human Rights, the media and its role in ensuring human rights, the emergence of the United Nations and its most important bodies based on the promotion and protection of human rights, the United Nations Human Rights Council and the work it does to ensure that human rights are fulfilled at the level of The world, the universal periodic review mechanism and other mechanisms of the United Nations council, in addition to the joint tasks that the media and civil society organizations carry out related to calling for reform based on Egypt's international commitments, especially those emanating from the universal periodic review mechanism.

During the first phase of the training program, media professionals unanimously agreed on the importance of defending the right to knowledge, the imperative to adopt a new law that guarantees freedom of information, and to grant more freedom to investigative media, which plays a very important role in uncovering human rights violations in a way that provides an opportunity to address them, in addition to The importance of following up and monitoring the public policies of the state and providing appropriate media coverage of the extent to which it fulfills human rights and international commitments to Egypt, with the aim of putting more pressure on policy-makers and legislators to adopt and adopt policies and legislation that ensure the fulfillment of the basic rights of citizens and the consequent fulfillment of relevant international obligations.
